IEC (Import Export Code) is a 10-digit unique code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Government of India. It is mandatory for any person or business entity wishing to import or export goods/services from India.
IEC is valid for a lifetime and does not require any renewal. It serves as a primary document for recognition by the Government of India as an Exporter/Importer.
When is IEC Mandatory?
- Customs Clearance: Required by customs authorities to clear shipments for import/export.
- Bank Transfers: Required by banks for sending money abroad (for imports) or receiving foreign currency (for exports).
- Availing Benefits: Mandatory to claim benefits under Export Promotion Councils or DGFT schemes.
